The little ice age occured in the 1500's (it was were the tempratures fell globally). There was a series of volcanic eruptions from 1250-1300 in the tropics which released clouds of sulphate. The aerosol particles then reflect solar energy which cooled the climate. This short intense burst of cooling was enough to initiate growth of ice sheets and glaciers. The extra ice reflected more radiation back to space, therefore disrupting the gulf stream and cooling the climate.
